Feng Shui for the Home: Bathroom and Toilet

As a rule, the bathroom receives the least attention during home planning and interior design.

The actual arrangement of components in the bathroom rarely leaves room for choice. If you're buying a new house or apartment, a complete renovation of the bathroom is usually the last thing on your mind.

The general rule for the bathroom, which applies to the whole house, is that whatever you are doing, you should be able to see anyone who enters. Of course, it's unlikely that someone will walk in while you're taking a shower or sitting on the toilet. Nevertheless, every fixture should be positioned so that the person using it is not facing away from the door.

When entering the bathroom, you should not immediately see the toilet. You can avoid this by rehanging the door so that it "covers" the toilet instead of opening towards it. The illustration shows the ideal position for the door if the toilet cannot be relocated, with the dotted line indicating an unfavorable position.

Flowing water is considered unfavorable from a feng shui perspective. It is also believed that it carries money away from your home. Therefore, it's important to ensure that taps, the shower, and the toilet are not leaking. If they are, you should fix them immediately. This also applies to kitchen taps.

Bath and Shower

The main fixture in the bathroom is the bathtub, either standalone or combined with a shower. Typically, bathtubs are rectangular, which is space-saving.

However, if you have the option to install a semicircular or oval bathtub, take advantage of it. These shapes are particularly favorable as they resemble the curves of a coin, and combined with the water element, which symbolizes money, this setup promotes wealth and prosperity.

Design

The dominant color in the bathroom should be white or soft pastel tones. Avoid bright colors. You can use small decorative items to stimulate the Chi energy in certain areas. In a combined bathroom, the bathtub, shower, and toilet should have the same color and design. White porcelain and chrome are preferable to dark colors.

The bathroom floor should be tiled but not too cold to the touch.

If the bathroom has a window, it's better to use blinds instead of curtains. Shower curtains should be made of waterproof material to prevent steam from damaging the fabric.

Drawers, Shelves, and Cabinets

These items should be simple, functional, and match the bathroom's style. Perhaps the most important feature of shelves, cabinets, and vanities in the bathroom is that they should be used.

At first glance, this may sound odd, but according to feng shui, there's nothing worse than a bathroom cluttered with lotions, shampoos, creams, and various small items that are not used. Chi energy should move as smoothly as possible, and rows of bottles and containers can hinder that.

If you lack space to store these items in wall cabinets or vanities, consider either getting larger ones or, the simplest solution, keeping only what is necessary.

In many bathrooms, you can see a display of cleaning and cosmetic products, but not all of them are used daily. Once you remove the excess and tidy up the shelves and cabinets, the Chi energy will circulate more freely, and the bathroom will become a more relaxing space.

Toilet

Since water is associated with wealth and the flow of Chi, frequent flushing in the toilet requires special attention in feng shui. Regardless of where the toilet is located in the home or apartment, certain qualities of that area may be "flushed away" if you don't take precautions. Therefore, the best position for the toilet is in an area where excess energy can compensate for the loss.

If the toilet is in a separate room from the bathroom, it will be less noticeable. The toilet lid and the bathroom door should always be kept closed, especially if the toilet is near the front door or bedroom door.

You can hang a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door to reflect the flow of energy. This is recommended if the toilet is located in an unfavorable position.

The toilet brings a strong Yin influence to the environment, so you can add some Yang elements to the décor if necessary to create balance.

Good air circulation (and therefore the flow of Chi) plays an important role, regardless of the toilet's location, so the toilet should either have a small window or a ventilation opening.
